Cholesterol: What you need to know to help control your cholesterol levels| Herbalife Advice
It may shock you to know that Cholesterol itself is not bad. Cholesterol is created and used by your body to stay healthy.
In this video, Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, FAND gives you the breakdown on cholesterol and provides tips on things you can do that may help keep your cholesterol levels in check.
Cholesterol is a waxy fatty substance that exists in every single cell in your body. That’s because your cell membranes require cholesterol. Your body also uses cholesterol to make hormones, Vitamin D and substances that help you digest your food. Your liver makes all the cholesterol you need so you don’t need to eat any cholesterol but most people do. Cholesterol is found in foods from animal sources such as meat, fish, and poultry. So if you consume these types of foods you’re going to be picking up cholesterol in your diet. Plants on the other hand can’t make cholesterol, so when you eat fruits, vegetables or whole grains you won’t be picking up any additional cholesterol.
What tends to drive cholesterol levels up in the blood isn’t how much cholesterol you eat but how much saturated fat you eat. Your liver produces more cholesterol when you eat a diet high in saturated and trans fats. Controlling your saturated fat intake may help keep your cholesterol levels in check. Other ways to help regulate your cholesterol levels are weight management, staying active, and making sure to eat plenty of fiber from a plant based diet including lots of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.
