Cholesterol and Your Heart: It’s Not Such a Bad Thing

eliptical-1-300x200If you’ve been to the doctor for a checkup recently, it’s likely there was talk of cholesterol levels—most likely, lowering them. But did you know cholesterol isn’t necessarily a bad thing? In fact, it’s the building block of all hormones! So, in order to maintain cholesterol levels already within normal range, I suggest taking a more balanced approach.

Cholesterol is vital to the human body and is an essential component of the cell membrane and in producing bile acids and vitamin D3. The body actually makes cholesterol in addition to what is consumed from food. It’s also important to understand that “total cholesterol” may be broken down into components: Two types of lipoproteins—low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL)—are lipids that make total cholesterol count, along with triglyceride and Lp(a) cholesterol. LDL transports cholesterol from the liver to other organs in the body, while HDL collects cholesterol in the blood and transports it back to the liver to be processed and excreted.

HDL is known as “good cholesterol” (even though it’s a lipoprotein, not cholesterol) because it helps remove cholesterol from the arterial wall, helping clean up extraneous cholesterol and deliver it to the liver. These HDLs are produced when the liver is healthy and a person has overall good bodily health.

Here’s the most important fact you need to know: Good cholesterol helps keep the blood vessels open by bringing circulating bad cholesterol to the liver, allowing blood to flow effectively from the heart and deliver nutrients to the body.

A good way to support healthy cholesterol is to live a cholesterol-friendly lifestyle. This involves moderate exercise, eating well and getting plenty of nutrients like krill oil.
