Apply night cream and wake up looking your best
Posted by Jacquie Carter, beauty expert
How many times have you come home from a long day of work and just wanted to flop into bed with zero regard for your skin? At that point, removing makeup seems harder than climbing a mountain, and applying night cream seems as difficult as running a marathon! In theory, it may sound like a good idea to skip your night time beauty rituals and go straight for our beauty sleep, but boy will you regret it in the morning.
Everyone knows we must cleanse and tone our skin every morning AND every evening before bedtime. This is non-negotiable and I recently wrote about the importance ofcleansing. Your nighttime regimen goes beyond cleansing and toning if you want to wake up feeling refreshed and looking fabulous. It also includes hydrating your skin before bedtime with the application of a night cream. Don’t worry though—your nighttime routine should really take a few short minutes. Whatever you do, when you get home from work or school, don’t just flop down on the bed. Once we do that, it’s all over and our skin won’t have a chance. When you get home, march straight into your bathroom and commit to a short beauty routine. You’ll be thankful you did when that alarm clock goes off in the morning.
Of course your first step is to always give your skin a good cleansing to remove dirt, oil, makeup and other impurities from your skin. This is the best way to end a long day. Think about all of the yucky stuff your skin comes into contact with throughout the day. Pollution, dust, smoke from cigarettes or even from cooking over a stove top or BBQ. Did you spray cologne, room deodorizer or hair spray today? If so, then those things may now be on your skin. Did you eat, cough, blow your nose or touch your face even once? If so, think about what’s on your face. Begin your night with a nice clean face and cleanse and tone accordingly. Proper cleansing and toning will allow your night cream to work its magic without any interference.
Night cream is very important when it comes to nourishing and hydrating your skin. And the best part is it works while you are sound asleep. Night cream is for both men and women. Yes, that means you too, gentlemen. Your skin needs night cream just as much as a woman’s, so you’re not off the hook here. In fact, if you’re shaving each day and apply aftershave, you may just need night cream even MORE than women because your skin is probably desperate for some hydration.
Why you need night cream
Of course, a night cream will moisturize your skin. A night cream can double the skin’s moisture and support anti-aging benefits. Night creams won’t be absorbed by your skin as quickly as most day lotions, and are usually much richer in texture. This intensive treatment allows you to keep your skin looking more youthful for a longer period of time. Whenever I get a bit lazy and think I can forget about my night cream, I just think about the lost hours of nourishment and hydration that I could have provided my skin with. I now keep night cream and cleansing cloths on my nightstand. Even if I wake up in the middle of the night and forgot to apply my night cream, I just reach for it and apply it while I am half asleep. It’s that important and it’s worth the extra effort.
Skin requires adequate hydration to look its best. Yes, as Susan and Samantha both say, we need to drink plenty of water to hydrate the body as a whole, but we also need to apply products on our skin to keep it moist, too. Dried-out skin doesn’t look good.. That’s why people who suffer from dry skin tend to look a little bit older than they really are. It’s all about hydration, and we all need it no matter what type of skin we have. A rich night cream used on a nightly basis will provide much needed hydration with little to no effort on your part. So there really are no excuses for not doing it.
How to apply night cream
To apply the right amount of night cream for your skin, you should start by using the “5 dot method.” Start by pumping your night cream onto your fingertips.
Put a dot of product on your forehead, nose, chin and each cheek (5 dots). Once the dots are on, simply massage your night cream into your skin in an upward and outwards motion. Once all of the product has been massaged into your skin, do a self-assessment and see if you need additional product. If you do, just add some more until you are content. Before long, you will know exactly how much product to apply and you won’t have to use the 5 dot method anymore.
Treat your neck as an extension of your face and be sure to apply night cream there as well. Your neck can be a sure give away to your actual age so let’s keep it hydrated by using all of our skin care products on this area as well.
Basically it comes down to this: give your skin a few minutes of your time every evening before you go to bed. Cleanse, tone, apply your eye cream, your serum and most importantly don’t forget your night cream. Hopefully, you’ll have a good eight hours where your skin can be pampered and nourished while you do nothing but get some beauty sleep. You can wake up with dull- and lackluster-looking skin or you can wake up looking and feeling more youthful and refreshed. I always vote for more youthful and refreshed—especially when I’m sleeping while all the hard work is being done!
