6 tips to clean makeup brushes like a proGood makeup brushes are an investment, find out how to care for your brushes and keep that soft, new feeling for longer. Added bonus: your makeup is bound to look even better too!

Makeup brushes feel so soft and plush when they’re new. Over time, wear and tear on your brushes can take that feeling away. I’m here to tell you that caring for your brushes needn’t be a chore and it can extend the life of your favorite brushes for years. Are you ready to learn how to clean your make up brushes like a pro?

I’ve had a deep love affair with makeup brushes for years. There’s something about the long handles, the different sizes and lengths of the bristles and the little cases that I find totally beguiling. Good quality brushes turn ordinary make up application into something almost magical. When I have that special brush in my hand, I just feel like I know what I’m doing—like a true makeup artist. If you’ve ever bought a good quality makeup brush, you know just how expensive they can be.  And, they won’t last long if we don’t take care of them.

There are so many kinds of makeup brushes: brushes for eye shadow, blush, bronzer, contouring, lips, you name it. The one thing they all have in common is that they are a breeding ground for bacteria. Yuck! Think about the oils and germs that gather on your face. And then think about how those undesirables get transmitted onto your brushes every time they come into contact with your skin. If that’s not enough to make your skin crawl, literally, nothing is.

High quality make up brushes are designed to last for years, but only if we take care of them and clean and store them properly.

Regular cleaning of your brushes will help remove:

·      Dirt and debris

·      Oils

·      Bacteria

·      Dead skin cells

·      Makeup

When makeup builds up on your brushes, it can make them feel scratchy. It’s a far departure from that soft and fluffy feeling we fell in love with when they were new. Cleaning your makeup brushes regularly will help keep them both soft and supple. If you suffer from sensitive skin, this is especially important.

Here are my top tips for keeping your makeup brushes feeling like new.

Clean your makeup brushes on a regular basis

Let’s keep this simple. If you wear makeup all the time then clean your makeup brushes once a week. Wear makeup less regularly? Clean them at least monthly. Here’s a rule of tumb I hope we’ll never forget; if your makeup brushes become claggy and caked in old makeup then it’s been far, far too long since they were last cleaned. Do you really want to be touching your face with something that unhygienic? Regular cleaning will keep your brushes fresh and feeling like new.

I find, it’s best to wash make up brushes at night, before you go to bed, so they’ll have the opportunity to dry before you next use them. Be sure to lay them flat to dry. If you dry them standing up, water will seep into the brushes at the ferrule (that’s the fancy name for where the bristles meet the handle). When this happens, the water can weaken the glue where the bristles are bonded and your brush will start to lose its hairs. That will lead to little hairs all over your face – not good look! There’s nothing more frustrating then picking little black hairs off of your skin after you’ve just finished applying your pristine makeup. Sad to say, once a brush starts to shed, you may as well toss it in the trash. As the hairs start to go, your brush will soon become uncomfortable to use and make it even harder to achieve a flawless look.

Best ways to clean makeup brushes

There’s no need to waste your hard earned money on special makeup brush cleansers. You can give your brushes a really great cleansing with plain old unscented white soap. You can also use gentle shampoos that are sulfate free or even baby shampoo. The gentler the better.

If you really want to get a special makeup brush cleaner, then I’ll advise you to read the label and don’t purchase any cleansers that contain alcohol. They will only dry out the brush hairs and eventually cause breakage. In my opinion, it’s just not worth it when a little old bar of soap will do the same trick.

5 steps to help you clean makeup brushes like a pro

In just a few short steps, you can have clean makeup brushes.

1. First, get your brush completely wet using lukewarm water.

2. Once your brush is saturated, swirl your brush onto a bar of soap until it lathers or apply shampoo to a sponge and simply swirl your brush on the sponge until you create a nice lather. (It’ll totally gross you out when you see all of the makeup colors coming out of the brushes).

3. You may have to rinse the brush and continue the same swirling technique a few times to clean all the old makeup off your brush.

4. Once you think all of the makeup, oils, etc. have been removed from the brush, rinse it in lukewarm water. If the  bristles feel slippery or slimy, then you’ll need to continue rinsing to ensure all of the soap or and shampoo has been removed.

If your brushes have a metal band on them, try NOT to get this area wet. It can lead to rust and eventually may destroy your brush.

5. Give your brush a gentle squeeze to remove the excess water and dry flat on a clean towel.  Your brushes should dry in about 6 to 8 hours so cleaning them before you go to bed is perfect.

Don’t forget about the handles

We tend to focus on just the brush bristles when we clean makeup brushes, but it’s important to clean the handles too. The brush handles are riddled with germs and yucky stuff too, so they need a good cleansing. You can simply clean the handles with a soapy cloth. If you’re a real germ freak, use a bit of rubbing alcohol. This way you can clean and disinfect in one quick step.

Preserve the names and numbers

This tip may sound silly to some of you but, if you really want to keep your brushes in tip-top shape, consider putting a bit of clear nail polish over the name or number on the brush handle. Names and numbers will eventually wear off, and with regular washing you’ll notice them starting to disappear. A quick coat of polish will definitely protect the brush information so you won’t forget just which brush is used for what. As a bonus, they’ll always look new!

Condition your brushes

If you start to notice that your brushes are feeling a bit stiff over time, try massaging a tiny bit of hair conditioner into the bristles and rinse in warm water. Dry them flat, as you normally would, to bring back that soft, luxurious feel that encouraged you to buy them in the first place.

***

That’s pretty much it. Just a few easy to follow and inexpensive ways to keep our personal makeup tools in tip top shape. Investing just a few minutes a week to care for your brushes will definitely help them last a lot longer.

If anyone has a tip I’m missing, please share in the comments section.

Top tips to beat body acne by Jacquie Carter

Top tips to beat body acneBlemishes and breakouts don’t necessarily just appear on your face. I’ve received many questions from readers who are concerned about body acne—those breakouts that can happen all over your body. What’s going on here?

We all fret over a tiny blemish, especially when it shows up at the most inconvenient time. Men and women both suffer from breakouts, and I can assure you that nobody is thrilled when it happens. Much like facial breakouts, body breakouts can ruin your day. There’s been a lot of discussion these days about body acne. Let’s take a look at some potential reasons behind body breakouts and what we can do about it. Some of these tips are sure are worth trying!

We all understand the importance of hygiene when it comes to the overall health and appearance of skin. There are no worse culprits than dirt and bacteria when it comes to blemishes and breakouts so here are some rules to follow.

Facial Acne

Everyone—men and women alike, must cleanse their face and their body every single day. Facial cleansing is a must and should be done in the morning and the evening before bedtime. Choose a cleanser that is most appropriate for your skin type. If you have frequent breakouts, your skin is probably on the oily side, so choose a gel-based cleanser that’ll help control and remove sebum from the skin.

Bonus Tip: If you have frequent breakouts on your cheeks, be sure you are cleaning your makeup brushes on a regular basis. And, make sure your telephones are cleaned regularly as well.  The transfer of bacteria can only cause problems for your skin.

Neck breakouts

As if facial breakouts weren’t enough, some deal with breakouts on their neck area too. If your hair is long enough where it touches your neck and shoulders, then you must keep your hair clean. The constant contact between skin and hair can transfer oils, bacteria and hair products to your skin, causing irritation and breakouts. Keep it pulled away from your skin, especially while sleeping.

Bonus Tip: Be wary of collars that are too tight. The tightness of fabrics can irritate your skin.  If you wear a lot of necklaces and scarfs, keep the jewelry and the scarfs clean so as not to transfer bacteria to your neck area. Lastly, when it comes to cleansing, always treat your neck as an extension of your face and be sure to wash in the a.m. and the p.m.  to remove any dirt.

Shoulder irritation

Have you noticed blemishes and breakouts on your shoulder area?  There are a couple of things to think about. Make sure your bra straps are resting comfortably on your shoulders and aren’t too tight. If you’re wearing tank tops, the same thing goes. For men and women who carry messenger bags, back packs or purses: keep it light. A bag that’s too heavy, coupled with the friction, can lead to skin irritation and breakouts.

Breakouts on legs

There’s nothing more frustrating than finding breakouts on your legs and thighs.  When it comes to the upper part of your legs, there can be several culprits that cause those unsightly pimples. In many cases, you may be having a reaction to body lotions, creams, shower gels, laundry detergents, bleach, dryer sheets, you name it. Pay attention if you notice your skin breaking out. For lower legs, you may notice irritation after shaving. Be sure to use a fresh, clean razor, warm water and and be wary leaving depilatory creams on for too long or applying self tanner right after a fresh shave.

Bonus tip: Just like the rest of your body, your legs don’t like to be wrapped too tight. Opt for looser fitting pants and remove any elastic fabrics as soon as possible after a long day.

Acne on your rear

I take it back, there is something worse then finding breakouts on your legs: finding breakouts on your BUTT. What the heck?! Make sure to keep those undies clean, not too tight and find a material that’s breathable. Again, be conscientious of your laundry detergent as some are filled with lots of deodorizers and detergents that can be irritating to your skin. Make sure to keep your backside moisturized as well.

Most commonly: BACNE

Back Acne or ‘Bacne’ definitely gets the most attention for body acne because it’s very common. Bacne! Clever huh? There are so many contributors to back acne including tight clothing, excessive sweating, not showering right after exercising, laying your back against dirty athletic equipment or even a yoga mat. The key here comes right back to cleansing your skin to keep it free from germs and bacteria.

More body acne tips:

  • Bathe, shower and embrace a daily facial skin care regimen
  • Look for blemish fighting products in all forms including facial care, spot treatments and even body washes and soap
  • Hand sanitizer, especially in a spray form can be your best friend when it comes to avoiding dirt and germs that could be causing your breakouts

I hope these tips helped you. There’s nothing worse then having to pass on a fabulous, backless dress due to a bad case of Bacne!

Jacquie Carter’s 5 best skin care tips

5 best skin care tips from Herbalife Beauty Expert, Jacquie CarterSomeone asked me recently for my top five best skin care tips. The question actually stopped me in my tracks because I have way more than five, and narrowing them down and prioritizing is seemingly impossible for me to do! But let’s face it, we all probably have five things that we do religiously for skin care.

When I think of skin care, I think of the importance of protecting it from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun because those rays are most responsible for aging the skin.  I think about dirt and oil on my skin and immediately start to squirm and want to run and jump in the shower.  I think about proper hydration especially since my skin is a bit on the drier side most days.  There are so many things to think about when it comes to skin care… I look at my bare feet and my mind races just thinking about my heels, toes, soles and nails and all the things I can do to make my foot look better. And that’s just my feet! So, I will entertain this exercise if you do the same. I’ll narrow my list down to my five best skin care tips if you promise to let me know what your top tips are in the comments section below. I think our priorities change as we start to get a bit older, so it’ll be interesting to get different perspectives based on age. And of course I LOVE the male perspective on everything!

Here we go…my five best skin care tips…

Hands off!

Grimy dirt, sticky oils, dried up skin cells and way too many other terrible things to think about are EVERYWHERE!  Our skin is in contact with a lot more than we can see. All these things can wreak absolute havoc on our skin. We need to properly care for our skin and that proper care starts with cleaning. Dirt, excess makeup, and oil left on the skin can clog pores and make the skin look rough, tired, and uneven. Keeping the skin free from all these things is important not only for our skin to look its very best.

  • Always wash your hands before you start your skin care regimen.  Whether it’s cleansing, moisturizing or masking, you should always start with freshly cleansed hands so as not to transmit any more grime onto your skin.
  • Try not to touch your face if you can. Every time you touch your face, you run the risk of transferring something onto your skin.
  • Make sure your makeup brushes are cleaned on a regular basis and the same thing goes for your telephone.  Anything that comes into direct contact with your skin needs to be clean. You would be surprised how many people complain about one side of their face having breakouts only to realize that it’s the side they hold their grimy phone against when they talk.

Clean skin is definitely in the top five for me. Without a clean template to start with, the rest of your skin care regimen become compromised. And, by the way, I never go anywhere without a hand sanitizer to keep my hands clean, and neither should you!

Beware of the sun

I’m the first one to admit that I was a seasoned sun worshipper. I’ve fried my body in the sun like it was a piece of chicken just for that summertime deep, dark tan. But boy have I paid the price for it. I learned this bad practice from my mother who, to this day, is a sun worshipper. No matter how many times I tell her to stay out of the sun, she just laughs at me. She has a year round tan but swears she’s never in the sun. She’s simply impossible and while I’ll never give up on pestering her about it, I know I’m fighting a losing battle. It’s because sunscreen is not a word that’s in her vocabulary…no matter what she says!!! Sunscreen, however, IS in my vocabulary and I truly value its importance when it comes to staying healthy and fending off the signs of aging.

The sun’s rays not only burn the skin (UVB rays) they also age the skin (UVA rays). Skin cancer aside, which is everyone’s main concern, the sun’s rays are responsible for skin spotting and discoloration, freckling, fine lines and course wrinkles, and the destruction of elastin and collagen tissue that can lead to sagging skin and wrinkles. It can even be responsible for dilation of small blood vessels under the skin. When skin is not protected, it can suffer a tremendous amount of damage at the hands of the sun.  This damage is easy to prevent if we take the proactive measures necessary.

  • Never go into the sun without wearing a product that contains SPF (Sun Protection Factor).  SPF products are available as daytime facial moisturizers, body lotions, cosmetics, hair care products, you name it.  There are no excuses when it comes to incorporating SPF into our daytime skin care regimen. From lip products to eye products there are always options that contain sun protection. Look for those products containing SPF 30 or more for daily protection. If you’ll be swimming or sweating, choose a product that’s water resistant and remember you must reapply throughout the day for maximum protection.
  • Stay covered up—a wide brimmed hat, big sunglasses, gloves and even a shady tree can help keep your skin protected. If your skin is exposed and is unprotected, it’ll most likely suffer the damaging effects of the sun. Keep yourself covered up with SPF and articles of clothing whenever you’re in the sun.
  • Sun protection must start at an early age.  Keep your kids protected by applying product before they head off to school and make sure they have a tube of sunscreen in their back packs. Be sure to teach them about the importance of SPF and encourage them to apply before recess. If you start early, it’ll become a natural part of their everyday activities.
  • These are drug products, so remember to use them as indicated on the label.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating is one of my favorite things to do. If you want to remove the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, you must exfoliate. When we are teenagers, our bodies completely shed skin about every two weeks, on average. As we age that process gets slower and slower and slower. It needs our help and that’s where a good exfoliating scrub comes in. Not only will a good scrubbing reveal the youthful skin cells beneath the dead skin cell build up, it also does something very important: scrubs remove the barrier that prevents our skin care products from penetrating into the skin to do their job to the best of their ability. If you want your products to deliver their maximum benefits, you must exfoliate on a regular basis.

  • “Physical” exfoliating scrubs, also called manual scrubs, contain exfoliating particles such as blueberry seeds, jojoba beads, nut shells, sugars and salts just to name a few.  These particles, when massaged into the skin, provide a physical scrubbing effect that helps to remove the skin cell buildup and other debris.
  • Chemical exfoliating scrubs contain ingredients such as enzymes and other ingredients to help dissolve the dead skin cells. Some examples include commonly known acids such as Glycolic, Salicylic and Lactic acids. There’s no manual scrubbing with chemical exfoliants and this type of exfoliating scrub may not be suitable for all skin types, as they can be a bit harsh for those with sensitive skin.
  • Everyone can benefit from a facial scrub. Men and women alike will feel and see a difference in their skin after using. I use one 1 to 3 times a week for maximum benefit.  Remember always to use according to label instructions.

Moisturize all day every day

When your skin is hydrated, it looks more youthful and has a radiant glow. Hydrated skin doesn’t come easily for most people. A daytime moisturizer and a rich night cream are necessary to maintain our skin’s moisture barrier and nourish the skin. Moisturizer is not just for the face, but also important for the body as well. And we all should make it part of our daily regimen to moisturize, from head to toe, each and every day.

  • Look for facial moisturizers that are clinically tested.  We need the hydration, so why not capitalize on other key benefits as well.  We want to improve our moisture for 8 hours or more, minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and SPF to protect us during the day. Yes, we can have it all!
  • Nighttime hydration is just as important, if not more, then daytime hydration—so never go to bed without a rich, hydrating night cream. It’ll do all the work while you sleep.
  • Apply your body moisturizer when you first get out of the shower while skin is still damp. This will help to maximize the moisture already in the skin, which the product can help you retain.

Last, but certainly not the least, and some of you will say that I am cheating but honestly I’m not. So here it goes…

Smile!

Technically this isn’t a skin care tip… but, I thought about eyes, lips, serums and all of those other great skin care products that are necessary for us to look our best… and a smile out ranks them all! Smiling will take years off of a person’s appearance for sure. There’s nothing more unapproachable or unattractive for that matter, then a pouty puss. If you look happy, people will perceive you as happy. If you look grumpy and mean, well who wants to be around that?  All those best skin care tips and products might be wasted because no one will notice your fabulous skin behind that mean face.

I hope you  enjoyed my five best skin care tips. Now it’s your turn! What are your best skin care tips? Tell me in the comments section.

Back to Basic Skin Care Tips

Back to Basic Skin

Are you tired of the barrage of beauty products coming at you from different directions? Here are a few back to basic ways to help you achieve beautiful, healthy, glowing skin.

Do you ever get sick and tired of the endless barrage of beauty products coming at you from different directions? Each one with a grander promise of making you look younger and more gorgeous. I turn on the television and it seems like commercial after commercial has the solution to all of my beauty problems. From lipstick to nail polish, from hair spray to body lotion, from basic facial cleansers to anti-aging miracles straight from the fountain of youth – is all of this really necessary in the name of beauty? Or, are there some simple, back to basic tips we can all follow in our endless pursuit of healthy looking skin?

Related Article: Top Tips to Manage Oily Skin

Don’t get me wrong, I am a die-hard fan of beauty products and I will try just about anything on the market just to see if it works. But are there little, back to basic practices we can all follow to help us achieve beautiful looking skin so we don’t have to spend countless hours trying the latest foundation shades, powders, tinted moisturizers and bronzers? I love my skin and I want to show it off, but some days it needs a bit of help. And I now realize that what I put on my body and what I put in my body are equally as important. And the best looking skin isn’t always found in a bottle.

Here are a few popular practices to help us achieve beautiful, healthy, glowing skin.

Catch some zzzz’s in the name of beauty

I know I’ve said this a million times, but my favorite beauty advice has always been to get plenty of beauty sleep. Remember, it’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason and if you are well rested, it is reflected in your skin. On the other hand, if you are tired, your skin looks tired. Unfortunately, tired skin looks old, dull and sallow. A lack of sleep leads to stress which can directly effect how the skin functions. And not in a positive way. In fact, a restless night of sleep can make any current skin conditions you have appear even worse. So, get into a nighttime routine, turn off your devices, TV, phone and your mind and try to get some much needed zzzz’s!

Kick the bad habits

Healthy habits = healthy looking skin. Bad habits = not so healthy looking skin. Remember to always follow the obvious rules of skincare. Too much alcohol is dehydrating to the skin. Smoking depletes the oxygen from our skin, which can age it. Lying in the sun without broad-spectrum sunscreen will not only burn the skin, it will age it faster than you can imagine. And eating a diet of junk food and grease will only lead to skin that looks, well, like junk food and grease. So try to kick the bad habits all together if you can. If something isn’t healthy for our bodies as a whole, it certainly isn’t healthy for the skin. The only difference is we can see the effect on our skin and can’t see what’s happening on the inside.

Avoid germs at all costs

The skin is our first line of defense against all things physical, chemical and environmental. And it also helps to keep germs from entering our body. Germs and bacteria on our skin can cause irritation, blemishes and breakouts. We need to be very conscientious of where those pesky little invaders are and destroy them. Carry hand sanitizer with you at all times and, use it. Every time you touch your face you run the risk of transferring germs from your hands to your skin. So hands off. Only dry your skin with a fresh, clean towel and be sure to clean your makeup brushes on a regular basis. Wipe down your cell phone with a bit of hand sanitizer to keep your cheeks free from skin ravishing germs.

My favorite hand sanitizer is in a spray form so not only can I keep my hands free from germs I can spray everything around me to make sure I am thoroughly protected in the name of beauty.

Take a walk

If you want your skin to look healthy and invigorated then exercise is a must. Take a briskwalk every day to help increase circulation and blood flow. When you do this more oxygen is delivered to your skin cells and the increased blood flow allows for cellular waste to be carried away. Take a good look in the mirror after a good workout. Your skin will definitely have a more youthful glow.

Keep it clean

This is the most obvious tip of all, but skipping it can be disastrous for your skin. Everyone, man, woman and teen, must wash their face every morning and evening before bedtime. Cleansing helps remove dirt, oil, makeup and germs from the skin. By keeping skin clean and free from impurities you are more likely to fend off breakouts and dull looking skin. Choose a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type and wash away the grime from the day for beautiful soft, smooth, clean skin.

Are there any other basic steps we can take in the pursuit of healthy skin? Sure there are. Take a daily multivitamin. Cut back on sugary and fatty foods, and choose nutritious ones, instead. And, of course, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This helps hydrate the interior, living layers of skin. It’s all about going back to the basics in the pursuit of healthy looking skin.

We all need to implement a healthy skin care regimen into our daily routine and skin care products are essential. But these simple, back to basics beauty tips can kick your appearance up a notch and complement your skin care regimen. They are common sense practices that can make a difference in your complexion. Sometimes the obvious things are the ones we tend to forget. Remember, the healthiest skin is always the most beautiful!

[CBS:  obvious effort to link to Herbalife product, so include disclaimers for Herbalife Skin moisturizer products, “The Herbalife SkinTM [product name] is tested. . . .”]Yes, we can have it all!
