Clean Up Your Diet – Clear Up Your Skin

by Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, FAND

Good nutrition means good complexion.

So many changes take place as kids move from childhood to adolescence that it’s hard to keep up. For one thing, their diets – which you might have had a little more control over when they were young – now leave a little something to be desired. At the same time, pimples and breakouts start to literally rear their ugly heads. So it’s no wonder that the food-pimple connection seems to be a no-brainer.

Pimples and acne are largely due to hormonal changes, but that’s not to say that diet doesn’t play a role. The latest research tells us that there is a likely connection, but one that’s a bit more complicated than most people think.

Related Article: Healthy Skin Care for Teens

Common wisdom has pointed the finger at greasy, fried foods – stuff that isn’t usually lacking in a typical teenager’s diet, like chocolate, pizza and French fries. But when it comes to connecting any of these individual foods to breakouts, studies have come up short.

The focus has shifted instead towards the overall quality of the diet – in particular, the relationship between skin eruptions and a diet heavy in refined carbs and sugars. And it looks like a diet that’s heavy in these ‘bad carbs’ – ‘white’ foods like white bread, pasta, potatoes, white rice and sweets – may be partly at fault.

When the diet is overloaded with refined carbs, it can lead to a condition of persistent, but mild, system-wide inflammation – a kind of slow simmering fire in the body that has been linked to all kinds of problems, including pimples and acne.

So it’s not simply the French fries that are the problem – it’s the fries coupled with the white bread burger bun and the sugary soda that lead to a heavy carb burden on the system.

Turning down the heat is pretty easy, it just requires a good nutritional offense. The focus should be on two things: healthier carbohydrates, and more anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats.

Clear out the refined ‘white’ carbs and sugars as much as possible. Occasional desserts are fine, but encourage your kids to cut down on sweets, especially sodas that dump tablespoons of sugar into the body in one gulp. Keep more of the ‘good’ carbs around – like fresh fruits and veggies, and whole grain bread, pasta, crackers and cereals instead of the usual white ones.

Kids can get their omega 3s from tuna – the one fish that many of them will actually eat.

Ageless Beauty: How to Look Your Best at Every Age

by Jacquie Carter

Did You know that our skin care needs are changing as we age? Jacquie Carter, Herbalife Director Worldwide Outer Nutrition Education and Training, discusses why our skin care regimen that worked in our 20s may not be as effective in the next two decades.

Skin care is important even in your 20s and 30s.

Skin changes as the years go by—and your skin care routine should change with it! Here are my favorite tips to help you look your best at every age.

Let’s face the music: aging is inevitable!

No matter how much we try to convince ourselves otherwise, the clock is going to keep on ticking and our skin is going to age. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing—and you can practice healthy skin care habits that will keep you looking your best no matter what your age.

Related Article: Five Strategies to Improved Results in Your Healthy, Active Life

We all know that our skin changes as we age, but what’s exactly happening? The skin is a remarkable organ; its ability to regenerate itself really is a wonder. New cells are constantly forming, but cells regenerate at a slower pace as we get older. Because of this, you may notice your skin texture changing over the decades. Skin becomes thinner as the years go by, and you may see more age spots. These are actually areas of hyper-pigmentation caused by UV rays—another reason why it’s so critical to wear sunscreen at every age!

Our skin also loses some of its natural elasticity as the years go by, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Compounding the problem is the loss of lipids (fatty acids) over time, which are responsible for keeping skin moisturized—meaning your moisture needs will change over time.

We have to face it: our skin care needs are going to change as we age. What worked for you in your 20s is probably not going to be as effective after a decade or two! On the other hand, we’re so inundated with “anti-aging” products that it’s easy to get ahead of ourselves when it comes to developing an effective skin care routine. Whether you’re 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, or beyond, it’s important to choose a regimen and products that are appropriate for your age and skin type. Here’s some of my favorite beauty advice for beautiful skin at every age:

Skincare in your 20s:

If you haven’t already started a beauty regimen, now’s the time! It’s important to get into a habit of developing a good skin care routine early on because it will help you look your best for years.
You may be seeing changes to your skin since you’re coming out of your teenage years and your hormones may be changing. Your skin will continue to adjust throughout your 20s, so take some time to figure out what your skin type is and choose your beauty regimen accordingly.
Some simple lifestyle changes can help, too. Late nights out and too much time in the sun can affect the appearance of your skin. Start wearing sunscreen daily if you don’t already do so, because this will help your skin remain elastic and supple. And while it’s tempting to stay out late socializing, try to limit your late nights so you can look your best during the day.

Skincare in your 30s:

This is when you may start noticing the signs of aging. Your skin starts to lose collagen and elastin and a few fine lines might make their debut on your face. You may need to change your beauty regimen to include more moisturizing products.

It’s common to start seeing signs of aging around your eyes, too. This is the decade when you should consider adding an extra step in your beauty regimen to focus specifically on the skin around your eyes.
Want a quick tip to avoid encroaching laughter lines? Wear big sunglasses! The bigger, the better in my book. If you choose shades with UVA and UVB protection then you’ll be keeping more of your face covered and protected from the sun. And, the best thing about shades is that they reduce the likelihood of squinting. Squinting is not a good look, so throw on some shades when you’re outdoors or driving and you could delay eye wrinkles. (By the way, isn’t ‘laughter lines’ a much nicer phrase than ‘crow’s feet’?)

Skincare in your 40s:

In your 40s, uneven skin tone is one of the most common complaints women have. This can be caused by too many hours in the sun with resulting age spots (so keep up your sunscreen routine!). It can also be a throwback to pregnancy which leaves some women with melisma (also known as the mask of pregnancy).
Other hormonal changes during this decade and the possible onset of menopause could leave you wondering where your youthful skin went. At this time, it’s best to visit your dermatologist for suggestions and possible treatments for your changing skin that will help you look and feel your best.
Many women in their forties feel confident that they have their skincare regimen nailed down so it’s a pain to realize that you may have to adapt and evolve. Happily enough, small changes do add up so you may need only a few tweaks to regain control of your skin.

Skincare in your 50s – and beyond:

A crucial element to skincare as you age is moisturizing! By the time you hit your 50s, skin is losing its elasticity and you may start to see sagging. Though you can’t turn back the clock, you can keep your skin (and yourself) hydrated!

4 Beauty Tips that Require Minimal Effort by Jacquie Carter

Simple beauty tips with a big impact | Jacquie Carter | Herbalife beauty adviceDo you want to look and feel just a little bit better today than yesterday, but with minimal effort? You don’t have to go to extreme measures to achieve beauty; sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest impact.

Here are a few simple at-home beauty tips I’ve come to love over the years that have definitely proved positive.

Simple Beauty Tips with a Big Impact

Simple Beauty Tip: Make Nighttime Skincare Easily Accessible

Don’t go to bed alone! Regardless of whether you’re male or female, you should always clean your face each evening. So, for those late nights when you just can’t muster up the energy to make it to the bathroom, reach towards your nightstand. Try keeping cleansing cloths, night cream and lip balm right next to your bed.

Related Article: 7 Tips to avoid ‘skin pollution’

No matter how tired or, let’s face it – LAZY we are, we won’t fall asleep with a dirty face when our favorite products are within arm’s reach. Remember, doing SOMETHING is better than doing NOTHING. No one wants to wake up to dull skin and clogged pores.

Simple Beauty Tip: A Steamy Shower Can Be Our Best Friend

Humidity, while not always great for our hair, is a good thing for our skin. Moisturizers are attracted to our skin most when it’s still damp from bathing. Combined with the humidity generated from a steamy shower, this is the best time to apply lotions for long lasting hydration. But you need to get started the minute you step out of the shower and before you open the bathroom door! If you wait too long to apply your moisturizer, the water will evaporate from your skin leaving it less receptive to hydration.

My advice? Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing your skin to dry off, then leave it a bit damp and lotion up. Nothing looks more touchable then soft, silky, hydrated skin.

Simple Beauty Tip: Get Glamorous with Some Nice Sheets (or At Least, a Nice Pillowcase)

Tired of waking up with sheet imprints on your face? I know I was! By simply changing to softer sheets, the problem will be gone! Silk or satin sheets won’t leave imprints on your skin. And, if you tend to sleep in the same position night after night, those skin creases just might start to become permanent. By changing to higher quality sheets, you can help prevent these imprints and fine lines.

Satin sheets and pillowcases are also great for our hair. Cotton pillowcases have a rougher surface and the friction caused by tossing and turning during the night can lead to unnecessary hair tangles and even breakage. By switching to satin, your hair will hold its style and will be much more manageable when you wake up in the morning.

And, the best part about switching to satin? You always wake up feeling sexy! Who doesn’t love the feel of silky satin against their skin? In the name of youthful looking skin and hair – go with satin!

Simple Beauty Tip: The One Beauty Tool All Ladies Need

There’s something that I just can’t live without and it’s my eyelash curler! I have yet to master the art of applying false eyelashes, so an eyelash curler is the next best thing. It takes just a few seconds each morning and it’s an inexpensive way to make a huge impact on our appearance. With just a little curl, your eyes instantly look bigger, brighter and more awake. It’s the simplest beauty trick for a big impact. (Men, I’m not saying you shouldn’t try this one but… you might find my other three beauty tips suit you a little more!)

Top tips to beat body acne by Jacquie Carter

Top tips to beat body acneBlemishes and breakouts don’t necessarily just appear on your face. I’ve received many questions from readers who are concerned about body acne—those breakouts that can happen all over your body. What’s going on here?

We all fret over a tiny blemish, especially when it shows up at the most inconvenient time. Men and women both suffer from breakouts, and I can assure you that nobody is thrilled when it happens. Much like facial breakouts, body breakouts can ruin your day. There’s been a lot of discussion these days about body acne. Let’s take a look at some potential reasons behind body breakouts and what we can do about it. Some of these tips are sure are worth trying!

We all understand the importance of hygiene when it comes to the overall health and appearance of skin. There are no worse culprits than dirt and bacteria when it comes to blemishes and breakouts so here are some rules to follow.

Facial Acne

Everyone—men and women alike, must cleanse their face and their body every single day. Facial cleansing is a must and should be done in the morning and the evening before bedtime. Choose a cleanser that is most appropriate for your skin type. If you have frequent breakouts, your skin is probably on the oily side, so choose a gel-based cleanser that’ll help control and remove sebum from the skin.

Bonus Tip: If you have frequent breakouts on your cheeks, be sure you are cleaning your makeup brushes on a regular basis. And, make sure your telephones are cleaned regularly as well.  The transfer of bacteria can only cause problems for your skin.

Neck breakouts

As if facial breakouts weren’t enough, some deal with breakouts on their neck area too. If your hair is long enough where it touches your neck and shoulders, then you must keep your hair clean. The constant contact between skin and hair can transfer oils, bacteria and hair products to your skin, causing irritation and breakouts. Keep it pulled away from your skin, especially while sleeping.

Bonus Tip: Be wary of collars that are too tight. The tightness of fabrics can irritate your skin.  If you wear a lot of necklaces and scarfs, keep the jewelry and the scarfs clean so as not to transfer bacteria to your neck area. Lastly, when it comes to cleansing, always treat your neck as an extension of your face and be sure to wash in the a.m. and the p.m.  to remove any dirt.

Shoulder irritation

Have you noticed blemishes and breakouts on your shoulder area?  There are a couple of things to think about. Make sure your bra straps are resting comfortably on your shoulders and aren’t too tight. If you’re wearing tank tops, the same thing goes. For men and women who carry messenger bags, back packs or purses: keep it light. A bag that’s too heavy, coupled with the friction, can lead to skin irritation and breakouts.

Breakouts on legs

There’s nothing more frustrating than finding breakouts on your legs and thighs.  When it comes to the upper part of your legs, there can be several culprits that cause those unsightly pimples. In many cases, you may be having a reaction to body lotions, creams, shower gels, laundry detergents, bleach, dryer sheets, you name it. Pay attention if you notice your skin breaking out. For lower legs, you may notice irritation after shaving. Be sure to use a fresh, clean razor, warm water and and be wary leaving depilatory creams on for too long or applying self tanner right after a fresh shave.

Bonus tip: Just like the rest of your body, your legs don’t like to be wrapped too tight. Opt for looser fitting pants and remove any elastic fabrics as soon as possible after a long day.

Acne on your rear

I take it back, there is something worse then finding breakouts on your legs: finding breakouts on your BUTT. What the heck?! Make sure to keep those undies clean, not too tight and find a material that’s breathable. Again, be conscientious of your laundry detergent as some are filled with lots of deodorizers and detergents that can be irritating to your skin. Make sure to keep your backside moisturized as well.

Most commonly: BACNE

Back Acne or ‘Bacne’ definitely gets the most attention for body acne because it’s very common. Bacne! Clever huh? There are so many contributors to back acne including tight clothing, excessive sweating, not showering right after exercising, laying your back against dirty athletic equipment or even a yoga mat. The key here comes right back to cleansing your skin to keep it free from germs and bacteria.

More body acne tips:

  • Bathe, shower and embrace a daily facial skin care regimen
  • Look for blemish fighting products in all forms including facial care, spot treatments and even body washes and soap
  • Hand sanitizer, especially in a spray form can be your best friend when it comes to avoiding dirt and germs that could be causing your breakouts

I hope these tips helped you. There’s nothing worse then having to pass on a fabulous, backless dress due to a bad case of Bacne!

How to create a convincing fake tan: The ultimate no-streaks guide by Jacquie Carter

How to create a convincing fake tan: the ultimate no-streaks guide

Whatever the weather, having glowing skin can help improve everyone’s complexion. Here’s my ultimate guide to fake tan!

Since sunbathing without protection is a big no-no but sun kissed skin is still considered a good beauty look, I know all of us are happy to have a sunless alternative. Let’s raise a cheer for fake tan, also known as sunless tanner.

These sunless tanning products have come a long way in the last few years. The active ingredient in most products, called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), darkens the skin to mimic tanning from the sun. The beauty of fake tan products is that they give us a marvelous tan, as if we’ve just returned from a tropical vacation, without risking burn and skin damage from staying out in the sun too long. Many fake tan options contain SPF and moisturizing ingredients, too.

When they first came on the market, fake tans were unpredictable and you saw a lot of bright orange carrots walking around! Sunless tanners are much better now but you still want to take the right steps to get great results. Read on or watch my video to learn how you can make beautiful sun-kissed skin appear effortless.

Get ready for a sunless tan

Your journey to a beautiful sunless tan ideally starts the night before. Begin by shaving and exfoliating thoroughly. Use a body scrub and pay special attention to areas where your skin is thicker and rougher. You’ll want to smooth out your elbows, knees and ankles as much as possible. Fake tan will color unevenly if it is applied to skin with a different texture so the more you can exfoliate and soften your skin beforehand, the better.

Prepare your skin

Allow plenty of time to apply your fake tan, as well as at least 30 minutes before getting dressed. Your skin should be clean and smooth; apply moisturizer particularly to your rougher areas. Make sure your skin is completely dry as any moisture on the skin can thin the product and cause streaks.

Apply in sections

The biggest challenge with fake tans today is getting even coverage. Some products are tinted so that you can see where you are applying it, but it’s still tough to get perfectly even, streak-free results even for the pros! If this is your first time with a fake tan you’ll want to be super methodical with this next step.

Apply product in sections—arms, legs, stomach, etc.—with a uniform circular motion. Always start from the top and move down; for the arms start with the shoulder then move to the upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, then back of the hand. For your back, use a cloth strap or long handled brush and take your time to cover every inch.

For elbows, knees and ankles, you might want to gently blot some of the excess product after applying so it isn’t too dark. Then apply more moisturizer to those areas.

Don’t give yourself away

Even though the best tans now come from bottles and tubes, giveaway orange hands are not a good look. Wash your hands several times throughout the application process so that your palms don’t get discolored.

Give it time

You should wait at least 30 minutes after applying your fake tan to get dressed, then wear loose clothing for as long as possible so you don’t rub or streak the color. Do not do anything that breaks a sweat or get wet for at least a couple of hours. Did I mention that this is one thing you don’t want to rush through?

It’s a great idea to start with a lighter tan and work your way to a darker one if you wish. Going darker is much easier than trying to lighten up afterwards! If your result is too dark then be patient, it will fade in a couple of days; you can also spot lighten by rubbing a cut lemon on the darker areas.

Stay sun aware

You should always use a self-tanner with sunscreen; otherwise apply your own sunscreen before going out.

***

Congratulations—you are now beautifully bronzed without ever being exposed to one ray of sunlight! Your tan should look great for 4-7 days before it starts to fade. Some people reapply once a week on their body and twice a week on their face. After a few attempts, you’ll get all of this down to a perfect science after a few weeks.

Of course, if you feel like sharing your colorful mistakes with me right here in comments I won’t judge you, I promise!
